Mission Columbia University's Sea & Ocean Conservation Alliance (SOCA) is committed to safeguarding the vitality and resilience of Earth's oceans through proactive conservation efforts and strategies that promote sustainability.Driven by a passion for marine ecosystems and a recognition of their critical role in sustaining life on our planet, SOCA seeks to inspire, educate, and empower the broader Columbia community to become stewards of the seas--in the local NYC environs & beyond. Our club aims to build strategic action plans that leverage Columbia's network, our own institutional knowledge, and willingness to get our hands dirty in order to address key issues like pollution/ocean cleanup, habitat destruction, sustainable fishing practices, coastal restoration/rehabilitation, marine decarbonization, and climate change adaptation/mitigation, among others.By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, engaging with relevant local/regional/national stakeholders, building strategic action plans, and coordinating days of service, SOCA will advance science-based climate solutions, foster sustainable practices, and advocate for policies that protect and restore ocean health for current and future generations.
