Call for SPS Student Government Representatives
As the new academic year approaches, the School of Professional Studies Student Government (SPSSG) will hold elections for open Program Representative and At-Large Representative positions.
SPSSG’s mission is to create a unified community for all students across SPS’ 18 programs. Members of the SPSSG are elected by their peers to represent each master's program as well as the student body at large and to advocate for students before the SPS administration, faculty, alumni, and the greater Columbia University community.
There are two opportunities for interested students to be involved in SPSSG. The first is to self-nominate or nominate another student as an SPS Program Representative candidate. Program Representatives act as liaisons between students and the faculty/administration and serve to improve the quality of students’ academic, professional, social, and personal development while at SPS. Program Representatives will also advocate for the incorporation of student opinions in the formulation of policies at SPS and be responsible for promoting and funding student-initiated programs. Nominations for Program Representative positions are open for the following M.S. and M.P.S. programs:
· Actuarial Science
· Bioethics
· Enterprise Risk Management
· Human Capital Management
· Insurance Management
· Narrative Medicine
· Negotiation and Conflict Resolution
· Political Analytics
· Sustainability Management
· Sustainability Science
· Technology Management
Please note that students can nominate and elect a representative only for their own academic program and only if there is a current vacancy for that program’s position.
The second opportunity is to self-nominate or nominate another student as an SPS At-Large Representative candidate. Any graduate student at SPS may run for an At-Large position, regardless of whether their program already has a Program Representative. At-Large Representatives serve with the same privileges as Program Representatives but focus on the unity between graduate programs at SPS and listening to advocating for the SPS graduate student body as a whole.
There are currently six At-Large Representative vacancies.
All elected representatives will participate in one of the established committees: Social, Career Design Lab, Alumni, or Community Engagement. Elected representatives can also apply for other leadership opportunities, including the three Deputy Officer positions of DEIA Officer, Public Relations Officer, and Online Engagement Officer.
All nominations will be due on Sunday, September 15th, by 11:59 p.m. ET.
